Israel’s southern border with the Gaza Strip continues to heat up ahead of anticipated protests, which are organized by the Islamist Hamas organization, planned to begin on Friday. Several incidents along the Gaza-security-fence took place over the weekend, with the severest incident occurring on Saturday, when Palestinian youths infiltrated into Israeli territory and attempted to burn a military engineering vehicle, used for the construction of an underground anti-tunnel barrier. The Israeli military said it refrained from opening fire on the Palestinian infiltrators, as the IDF identified them as civilians, who immediately fled back to the Gaza Strip, once an IDF force approached the scene. No injuries were reported, and only minor damage was caused to the engineering vehicle. In response to the incident, however, the Israeli Air Force attacked a target belong to the Islamist Hamas organization in Rafah city, located the southern Gaza Strip. The IDF spokesperson’s unit released a statement in which it “warned of any incidents in which civilians are called to hold ‘protests’ used as cover to damage security infrastructure and to attempts to hurt Israeli citizens or IDF soldiers.”
