King Abdullah II of Jordan is warning that Israel’s plan to assert sovereignty over parts of the West Bank would jeopardize the stability of the Middle East.
In a video conference with members of the United States Congress, the Hashemite Monarch highlighted his perceived opinion that any unilateral steps undertaken by Israel to annex the disputed territories on the Jordan River would sabotage the chances of attaining regional peace and security; which he asserted can only be achieved by establishing an independent sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
It is important to mention, however, that King Abdullah stopped short of acknowledging any consequential infringement in relation to the 1994 Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty if the annexation is eventuated.
