The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis held a meeting with the deputy leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah organization, Sheikh Naim Qassem. According to a statement published on the U.N. envoy’s twitter page, “an open and substantive discussion on a broad range of topics was held,” after which the Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General gave Kubis a copy of his book, which the U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon referred to as “a necessary reading.”
The publicized meeting between the U.N. envoy and the widely recognized terror group’s deputy leader infuriated Jerusalem. According to an official response, Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon wrote: “We are shocked and disappointed by this meeting with a designated terror organization’s leader, threatening Israel, Lebanon and the whole region,” while the IDF Spokesperson’s unit wrote in a jabbing statement on its twitter account, “Do you know what else appears to be necessary reading? @UN Resolution 1701” – in reference to the acknowledged violations by Hezbollah of the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended hostilities following the 2006 Israel-Lebanon war. The official of the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon did not immediately respond to TV7’s request for comment.
