Israel closes its Taba border crossing with Egypt in fear of terror attacks

Following the rocket fire from Egypt’s Sinai region toward Israel’s southern communities yesterday (10.4.17), in which a rocket exploded in an open area in the Eshkol regional council, an unmanned aerial vehicle reportedly targeted a structure in the Peninsula’s Rafah city, adjacent to the border with Israel, killing one person. TV7 could not verify the responsible military behind the attack, as both Egypt and Israel refused to comment on the report.

The aerial strike also comes just hours after Israel decided, in an unprecedented move, to close its Taba crossing with Egypt, due to what Israel’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau said was an alert for an imminent terrorist attack in the Sinai Peninsula by the Islamic State.  In a statement, the Counter-Terrorism Bureau said that Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, who is responsible for the country’s border crossings, decided to close the border immediately until the end of the Jewish Passover holiday, on the 18th of April, after consulting with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, effectively forcing thousands of Israelis who had planned a vacation in the resorts of the peninsula to change their plans.
