The IDF soldier responded by opening fire toward the knife-wielding assailant, who was killed in the attack.
According to details from a preliminary investigation, the terrorist exited a vehicle at the Gush Etzion Junction with intent to murder IDF troops, who are permanently stationed there to secure the busy motorway.
Video apparently taken by a passerby circulated on social media showed the suspect lying on the road at the intersection, knife still in hand, as three soldiers approached with rifles trained on him.
Another Israeli military official identified the terrorist as a Palestinian from an outlying village.
No injuries were reported among the IDF troops.
According to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, a manhunt has been launched for the driver who drove the terrorist to the site.
Violence has simmered in the West Bank, among territories Palestinians seek for a state, since United States-backed peace talks with Israel stalled in 2014.
