Commander of Israel’s ground forces Ya’akov Barak revealed that the goal in a future war with Lebanon would be to “reach a decisive victory,” including the assassination of the leader of the Iranian-proxy Hezbollah, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah. In a briefing to Israeli reporters, Major General Barak noted that any future conflict is likely to be very different from previous wars, including for Israel’s Home Front that is expected to be targeted by a significantly larger and more sophisticated arsenal of rockets. For that reason, Barak elaborated, Israel’s ground forces are likely to be deployed into enemy territory more quickly, widely and deeply than before. The IDF Ground Forces chief also revealed that Hezbollah has been establishing an underground tunnels network across Lebanon’s southern frontier with Israel, “not necessarily to infiltrate Israel,” but aimed at storing weapons and shelter fighters. In addition, Major General Barak estimates that in the next war with Hezbollah, the Iranian backed militia may receive assistance from other Shi’ite militias in Syria, as well from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, that will force the IDF to deal with three fronts at the same time.
