Yukia Amano, the Chief of the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he was confident following a visit to Washington of “very good cooperation” with the United States on Iran’s nuclear agreement, despite President Donald Trump’s hawkish comments, referring to the international accord with the Islamic Republic as the ‘worst deal ever negotiated’.
“I am confident that we can have very good cooperation with the United States in the future,” said Amano.
The agreement, referred to as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, was reached in July 2015, between Iran and the P5+1 – the United States under the Obama Administration, Russia, China, France, Britain plus Germany – restricts Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions against the Islamic Republic, an agreement President Trump said he wanted to reopen to assure Iran “doesn’t have a chance” to acquire nuclear weapons. Since Trump took office in January, however, his administration has given little indication of what concrete stance it will take on the nuclear agreement with Iran.
