An Egyptian soldier opened fire on construction workers performing routine maintenance work along the border fence, severely injuring an Israeli civilian, who later succumbed to his wounds. Following an initial inquiry into the incident it was revealed that the Israeli casualty was a 15-year-old teenager, from a Bedouin community in southern Israel, who worked alongside several of his family members.
The IDF and the Defense Ministry said in a statement that they will continue to examine the circumstances of the incident. Egypt is battling an Islamist insurgency in the rugged and thinly populated Sinai Peninsula bordering Israel, but incidents in recent years at the Fortier with Israel have been rare.
